SOMETIMES WE THINK, perhaps it’s time to stop testing An Post. We know they can and will deliver almost anything that’s asked of them. But once again, this takes the cake.
They recently delivered a beermat that had been fashioned into a postcard, complete with drawn-on stamp.
The succesfully delivered beermat was posted to Reddit Ireland earlier today:
I was informed that if you draw a stamp on a beermat and post it, it will arrive thanks to an unwritten postman’s code. Hopefully this is proof.
The sender appears to have been inspired by Dermot and Dave on Today FM, who earlier in the year revealed an ‘An Post secret’ to the rest of Ireland.
It goes like this: If you peel the back off a beermat and use it as a postcard, drawing on your stamp, post workers all over the world will ensure it gets where it needs to go.
This appears to be a bit of an urban legend, with another version of it saying it just applies to beermats sent between the UK and any other Commonwealth country (which is even weirder, TBH).
Dermot and Dave challenged their listeners to try it out, and lo and behold, a beermat postcard arrived a short time later from Dungarvan.
Unfortunately, the note that An Post delivered along with the latest attempt seems to put any rumours of a ‘postman’s code’ to rest:
No but will let it go through this once.
So don’t get any funny ideas, alright.
